Mega Meshes - Modelling, rendering and lighting a world made of 100 billion polygons in realtime
Ben Sugden from Lionhead Studios developed a new technology that renders a 100 bilion polygon scene in realtime on an Xbox 360 or PS3 at 30fps. The idea behind the tehnology is that everything is loaded hierarchically. Stating from a low polygon mesh, the system adds more polygons dividing the actual mesh for the areas that are closer to camera and need more details. Normal maps will be generated by the system from a higher subdivision of the mesh. The textures are loaded the same way but the UV map will be generated automatically. Ambient occlusions, light, shadows, GI, etc are all generated automatically.
